CP (College Preparatory)

AS/AP (Advanced Standing/Advanced Placement)

  • Approximately 1-2 hours weekly homework

Modern World History I CP/AS 

Grade Level: 9

Modern World History I is a one-semester course which introduces the student to European history beginning with the development of democratic institutions, the Enlightenment, the age of revolutions, industrialization, and imperialism.  The advanced standing (AS) course requires extensive reading, writing, and homework assignments.  Students taking advanced standing should possess higher than average academic ability and time management skills.

This course meets the UC/CSU “a” history requirement.

 

Modern World History II CP/AS

Grade Level: 10

Students will take Modern World History II during the fall semester of their sophomore year. The course explores the causes and consequences of the two World Wars, totalitarianism, the Cold War and international developments in the post WWII world.  The advanced standing  (AS) course requires extensive reading and writing assignments.  The course also prepares students for the AP US history course and exam by working with primary documents and writing Document-Based Question essays each semester.  Students taking advanced standing should be highly-motivated and possess strong academic study skills.

This course meets the UC/CSU “a” history requirement.

 

 

Contemporary World Studies CP/AS 

Grade Level: 10

Students will take Contemporary World Studies during the spring semester of their sophomore year. CWS integrates geography, culture, and the historical development of four possible global regions: Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The course also explores the effects of imperialism, nation-building, globalization and further examines the challenges of social justice and human rights.  The advanced standing (AS) course requires extensive outside reading and will prepare students for AP courses by working with primary documents and writing Document-Based Question essays. Students taking advanced standing should be highly-motivated and possess strong academic study skills.

This course meets the UC/CSU “a” history requirement.

 

 

United States History

Grade Level:  11

U.S. History is a two-semester course.  The goal of this course is to provide students with a rich, balanced, and thought-provoking treatment of the American past.  The first semester reviews the early settlement of America through the Civil War and covers the period of Reconstruction, Industrialization, the Progressive Era, the rise of America as a world power, and the nation’s involvement in the First World War.  The second semester focuses on the 1920’s, the Great Depression, U.S. involvement in WWII and its consequences, including the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement, and the 60’s counterculture.  The course ends with contemporary history and the challenges posed by the early 21st century. 

This course meets the UC/CSU “a” requirement.

 

 

AP United States History

Grade Level: 11

The AP US History course is a graduation requirement alternative which covers the major topical areas of a standard college level U.S. History course from the time period of discovery and the first European explorations to the present day. Students will study and analyze original documents and alternative interpretations of American history in an attempt to prepare for the Advanced Placement examination. Students who enroll in the course can expect extensive reading and writing, which will include document-based and free response essays. Students should be highly motivated with strong academic and time management skills and should have an interest in furthering their understanding of the American past.

 This course meets the UC/CSU “a” requirement.

 

 

American Government

Grade Level:  12

This is a one-semester graduation requirement which covers the origins and structure of American government at national, state, and local levels.  The course focuses on the Constitution, the Bill of rights, the three branches of government, the rights and responsibilities of a citizen, and the relationship between federal and local government.  Students will discuss current political issues as they prepare to vote, participate in community activities, and to assume the responsibilities of citizenship. 

This course meets the UC/CSU “a” requirement.

 

 

AP Government and Politics United States 

Grade Level: 12

This one-semester course is an alternative graduation requirement to the regular American Government course. The course is designed to prepare students to take the Advanced Placement Examination.  Coursework is challenging, requiring extensive reading and writing. Topics cover the Constitution and the political institutions that makeup the framework of American government.  Students are expected to possess the strong academic skills to master a considerable amount of material in preparation for the AP exam. 

This course meets the UC/CSU “a” requirement.

 

Economics CP

Grade Level: 12

This is a one-semester course and a graduation requirement. Students will study the principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics, including production and consumption, supply and demand, business organization, fiscal and monetary policies, and international trade.  The course also explores the changing role of government in the economic system.  

This course meets the UC/CSU “g” elective requirement.

 

AP Macroeconomics

Grade Level: 12

This one-semester course is an alternative to the Economics graduation requirement.  The course explores macroeconomic concepts such as the open market structure of business and government regulatory policies and will prepare students to take the Advanced Placement Examination. The course is challenging and students are expected to possess strong academic skills to master a considerable amount of material in preparation for the AP exam.

 This course meets the UC/CSU “g” elective requirement.
